HONOR ROSIE 2.0

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s honor the women who are making history today – America’s New Rosies.”

Like Rosie the Riveter, these women are low-wage federal contract workers. They are women like Dyann Jaggers who has labored on federal contracts for 25 years but still makes a poverty wage.
“I am a 66-year-old mother and grandmother, and I’m struggling to survive on $12 an hour. I’m afraid I can’t ever retire.”

Dyann and her coworkers are fighting to create a Good Jobs Nation. They’ve walked off their jobs and gone on strike 11 times at federal landmarks like the Pentagon, the Smithsonian Museums and the U.S. Capitol.

“During WWII, an army of women — made famous by the iconic “Rosie the Riveter” image — entered factories and shipyards to take up work for defense contractors. Faced with pay discrimination and other abuses, women waged strikes to demand a say in working conditions and win improvements on the factory floor.” McClatchy News Service

“In response, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9017 to ensure that strikes did not impede the war effort. The order established the National War Labor Board, which often required employers to recognize unions and bargain collectively with employees in exchange for workers taking a no-strike pledge. As a result, unions added millions of workers to their ranks, which after the war helped build the biggest middle class in history.” The Los Angeles Times
